MICR is a short form for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. It is a system usually used by banks to check or scan cheques and money. The cheques is passed though a machine, then it magnitizes the ink and translate the magnetic information into characters. The ink used are also specialize for this process. By doing this, the process of scanning and processing information is much faster.

sir, does that mean MICR is not used to scan whether the check or cash issued is fake?
or is it only used to print the magnetic characters in the cheques?
doesn't that mean that MICR IS used to see whether it is a forfeit cheque or valid cheque?

We know that MICR is the abbreviation of Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. The machine recognition of numeric data or character printed in special typefaces with magnetically charged ink or toner, usually containing iron oxide, FeO (It contain this type of metal because iron is easily found and abundant compared to other types of metals and since it is one of the ferromagnetic substances,it is easily magnetized). It is used to print magnetic characters on bank checks, bank notes and deposit slips. MICR readers detect the characters after the machine magnetizes the characters on the financial transaction documents and convert them into digital data. It serves as a deterrent to fraud, because a photocopied check will not be printed with magnetic ink and the machine cannot read them as there are no characters on the notes being magnetized.

Well the INK is a special type of ink (costly) mostly made up of ferrous-oxide.

A magnetic ink prints these characters in the form of special typefaces on documents.
When the particular document is passed through a special machine, the machine decodes the characters by magnetizing them and then transferring them onto the MICR read head to be read.
Each character produces a unique waveform that then can be easily identified by the system operating the machine.
MICR provides a secure, high-speed method of scanning and processing information.
