Cie AS Computing

Dear all,

Welcome to AS computing class. I am Dr.Ravi your facilitator for this course. This course consists of two modules, theory and practicals. In theory we will have 12 chapters and in practicals we do have programming classes. You will sit for theory and practical exams at the end of the course, which is conducted by CIE.

All the best, keep moving, for there is always a helping hand above you to guide you.

i think that's about it rite 4 hardware?

how bout software

wat are the types of apps software?

wat is integrated software?

wats a utility program?

Ok Afifah,

Application software are the software's that are meant for specific purpose. So, visual basic is an example, Ok now you have asked, different types of application software, I feel that is a wrong question. The term application software refer to more generic type of softwares. MS-office for instance is a application software. So i dont think your question is valid.

Integrated software , i think i have clearly explained in my PowerPoint, Please check my PPT.

Utility program also was discussed in the class with valid examples and PPT. However, please note the key point is, "extra routines that are added to the operating system"

Dain, your answer was great. A good quality posting. Hope Asyraf makes use of it.

Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) & Optical Character Recognition (OCR) are two important examples of input devices. Well, technically MICR detects writing and data from checks using magnetic properties of some sort. This is because the numbers on a check are printed in magnetic ink  and therefore the MICR can detect and read the numbers. OCR's, as the name suggests, uses an optical lens to read characters.I hope this helps, Asyraf... :)

Dain, What is MCR and OCR ?

Excellent Cho,

The main key point in System software is " System softwares  are  a computer softwares  designed to operate the computer hardware and to provide a platform for running application software. Examples are hardware drivers, commands like disk fragmentation and formatting.

System Software have direct control and access to your computer hardware , and memory locations . They perform I/O operations on various memory locations , and control the hardware , to make the application software do a task . Operating systems , are the main examples for system software .

Exampls :
1) Microsoft Windows
2) Linux
3) Unix
4) Mac OSX
5) DOS
6) BIOS Software
7) HD Sector Boot Software
8) Device Driver Software i.e Graphics Driver etc
9) Linker Software
10) Assembler and Compiler Software

Application software
run under System Software , and are made to do a specific task i.e ( Word Processing etc) , which have indirect access to the hardware (i.e Behind System Software) .

Examples :
Web browser, word processing software, spreadsheet software, database software, presentation graphics software.

1) Opera (Web Browser)
2) Microsoft Word (Word Processing)
3) Microsoft Excel (Spreadsheet software)
5) MySQL (Database Software)
6) Microsoft Powerpoint (Presentation Software)
7) iTunes (Music / Sound Software)
8) VLC Media Player (Audio / Video Software )
9) World of Warcraft (Game Software)
10) Adobe Photoshop (Graphics Software)

can u give me examples of systems software, apps software and operating systems mujahid? so that i can see a clearer picture

Muhammad Mujahid Lokman said:

You would use an operating system on your pc/laptop to run all the processes and manage all the hardware and resources contained in your unit, also to manage the applications you have installed there.. whereas you would have system software or application software to sit on top of your OS to manage you day to day emailing, word processing, faxing, photos, music downloads etc...

On my opinion, System software refers to the files and programs that make up your computer's operating system. What about others ?

Ok, i got a question thts not related to AS Computing. Sorry Dr. Ravi~` But can anyone tell me if it's possible to download Visual Basic 6.0??? I downloaded Microsoft Visual basic 2008 Express edition but it's very different...i don't know how to use it.. .. Anyone knows???

What we've learned last week is Programming " How to create Digital File "..
The software used is Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0
We have to use several code to create this file. For example "OPEN", "WRITE", " CLOSE".

can dain tell me what is the coding that we use to create this file ?

Dear Asyraf,

Thanks for posting your query and that to on a sunday. Firstly, i would like to tell you , that it would be more appropriate to use the word "sequential file" rather an "digital file".

Over to Dain.

Dr.Ravi

No problem dain, still it is related to your Computing subject. I think the latest version of VB uses more of .net concepts. I should admit that I have not tried the version which you are referring to. However, when time permits will try it and revert back to you.
