Cie AS Computing
Dear all,
Welcome to AS computing class. I am Dr.Ravi your facilitator for this course. This course consists of two modules, theory and practicals. In theory we will have 12 chapters and in practicals we do have programming classes. You will sit for theory and practical exams at the end of the course, which is conducted by CIE.
All the best, keep moving, for there is always a helping hand above you to guide you.

Sir, how fast the hard disk is rotating?

the video is actually a bit unclear.
how does the computer manage to read the data saved in a floppy disk?
how many mb can actually be stored in a floppy disk?
TQ.

What is Floppy Disk ?
A floppy disk is a data storage medium composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealed in a square or rectangular plastic carrier lined with fabric that removes dust particles. They are read and written by a floppy disk drive (FDD).Invented by IBM, floppy disks in 3.5-inch (89 mm), 5.25-inch (133 mm) and 8-inch (200 mm) forms were an ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange from the mid-1970s to the 2000s.
While floppy disk drives still have some limited uses, especially with legacy industrial computer equipment, they have been superseded by data storage methods with much greater capacity, such as USB flash drives, portable external hard disk drives, optical discs, memory cards, and computer networks.
Afifah, That was indeed a good question you have posted in the forum
1) Let me share some history of Floppy. As i mentioned in the class, floppy are of different sizes, 8 inch floppy, 5 and a quarter inch floppy, 3 and a half inch floppy. However, as you might have known, we no use only 3 and a half inch floppy.
2) let me now come to your question. I mean, what is the storage capacity of the floppy. Right. Floppy were of different types, like single side single density, single side single density, double side double density, double side single density, double side high density. The one we use is double side High density.Depending on the type of the density, floppy capacity differes.
3) Now, in a 3 and a half inch floppy, which is a high density floppy, can store 1.44 Mb of data, that is 1440 killobytes, that is 1440 x 1024 bytes as you know 1024 bytes are 1 kilobyte.
Hope i have cleared your doubts.

Dr. Ravi...about routers and modems, how come tmnet unifi has a seperate modem and router for wireless connection while streamyx b4 this only used one unit as a modem & wireless router\???

Dear Dain and Afifah,
Firstly, the word MODEM stands for Modulator De Modulator. That it, is modem are used to convert digital signals to analog signals and vice versa. It is mainly used in dial up networking connections, where telephones are used to establish connections.
In the case of a router, it is a means by which the a network can be split to connect different computers. (A improvised version of a HUB). A router identifies the best route which it determines to speed up the data transmission process.
Now the question of Dain,
Please note, MODEM is AS computing subject but routers are A2 stuff. Also your question is something on the technical side of TMnet and streamx, which is not the right to address to me. May be we can write to the company and ask for their justification. Sorry about it.
