Cie AS Computing
Dear students of Block 6 AS computing, welcome to the computing class. I am your facilitator Dr.Ravichandran ( you can call me Dr.Ravi), I will be your course facilitator for AS computing and A2 computing. I will start communicating with you in this discussion forum - where you can start posting your queries and useful resources.
You are highly encouraged to interact with me and also with your peers as the class begins from 30th July 2013.
All the best and keep moving. Do not hesitate to ask and send your queries if you have one.
Regards,
Dr.Ravichandran
i HAVE ATTACHED THE SYLLABUS TOO.
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE ATTACHMENT FILE.

Hello, Dr. Ravi
During our lesson yesterday, I learned about the different sizes & data storage capacities of floppies. You have also piqued my interest in learning about the ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) which is an 8-bit character representation. My question is, is the ASCII still used in CDs or USBs today?
In order to write the data onto the floppy, the iron coat of the disk has to be magnetized. Does that mean in order to delete them the disk has to be demagnetized ?
Thanks for the attachment Dr. Ravi. This is Ariel, one of your new students.
From the previous class, I've learned that before the existence of thumb-drives a.k.a. U.S.B. drive, we used floppy disks to store and transfer information between computers.
I've learned of 3 different sizes of floppy disks. The 8 inch floppy disk, the 5 1/4 inch, and also the 3 1/2 inch.
I have a question though. I've looked through Wikipedia about the floppy disks (link included: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disk ) and found out that for the 8-inch floppy disks, it says that it's maximum storage capacity is up to 6.2Mb if unformatted, but only reaches 500kb if formatted. What is the difference between formatted and unformatted floppy disks?
Thanks.
Regards,
Ariel L. Takom
Hello Dr. Ravi,
Thanks for the attachment. Yesterdays class was very interesting and it made me more interested towards computing. I did not know there were so many types of floppy disks . I would like to know if the new storage device , SSD ( solid state drives ) operate the same way .
greetsings Dr. Ravi,
i have learnt that there are many types of floppy discs according to their sizes and data storage.I also learn how does the floppy disc saves data using codes according to the ASCII.
I also want to know what is the difference between high density and double density floppy disc?
thank you.
