Confused - choosing between 3 subject or 4 subject- read this message from me.

Why three subjects instead of 4 Life for a A-level student has always been like a roller coaster, navigating through the ups and downs, with lots of challenges. What I would like to narrate here is story of Nur Diana an A level student at KYUEM. Nur Diana, was often described by her friends as dramatic – she loved being in the spotlight , interacting with people and was involved in school activities, such as, being the net ball captain of Sapphire house, participating in college plays etc. He was keen on pursuing accounting after her SPM. There were arguments at home, especially with her father, who felt that she should pursue a degree in management while continuing her interest in accounting as hobby. It was at this stage, that they consulted a counsellor who offered a third perspective. She asked Nur Diana to intern at a local charted accounted company during her vacation after SPM. It was a decision that changed her life. Her experience with the professional accounting company was an eye-opener. She realised that her dreams of being an accountant was based on perceptions of glamour. The long working hours, erratic schedules and the lack of an appropriate financial compensation was a hard lesson in reality. The demands were different from what she had imagined and she also realised that more than being an accountant, she enjoyed using computers to find solutions to the statistical problems she had encountered with the accounting professionals in the company. Today, Nur Diana, has completed her degree in computer engineering at a famous university in London and works for a top company in the US. What do you infer from the above story? It is important that you follow your dreams, but avoid alienating your family. Discuss your fears and apprehensions with them and show them that you are open to suggestions. Do you homework. This will also help you earn brownie points with your family! How the above story would be useful at KYUEM If you are going to peruse a course at KYUEM, often you get confused to choose 4 subjects or 3 subjects. Before deciding to take 4 subjects or 3 subjects, understand the core skills by searching net, reading blogs, which offer advice and last but not the least discuss with senior teachers/tutors. However, never make a decision based on your discussion with teachers, tutors, senior students, blogs etc. The final decision should emerge from you with the clear discovery of truth by yourself. So, ask to yourself, if it is worth to take 4 subjects and is it a good idea to drop one of the subjects half way. You will then find - being with three and focusing on it with more confidence than taking 4 and struggling to score. Think before it is too late. Dr.Ravichandran Purushothaman
