It is well known that the college in Lembah Beringin, KYUEM is a fully residential college. Students in this college will have to live in a chalet not far to the academic blocks and the resource centre. The tranquil settings of the college allow students to work hard with few distractions. However, the students were complaining that the chalet contains a lot of rats which gave an awful sight to students. This situation had brought brought up to the headmaster (Mr Sutherland)’s office.
Mr Sutherland then hired a worker to help to solve the problem of having rats in the chalet. The proposal below was suggested by Mr Jonathan, the worker.
Y be the number of rats the cat can eat

X-Y=X-Y 2(X-Y)-Y=2X-3Y
|
|
24X-40Y-Y=24X-41Y 6X-9Y-Y=6X-10Y

41-24=17 2(17)-24=10

Curious Case of Dead Bunnies
One day, Mrs. Hunter found her daughter Kira running towards her, crying his eyes out. He was stammering and could not speak coherently. She consoled him by giving him a hug and carried him to Bella (his bunny)’s cage. To her surprise she found that Bella was no longer moving about. Instead, she seemed to be in a paralysed state, cold and utterly dead.
The next day at school, Kira told her friends about what happened, still distraught and upset. Her friend Jacob who lived next door came up to her and said his bunny died in his cage too. They checked the expiry dates on the food and water they gave to their sweet little bunnies but could not connect them to their deaths. Interestingly, it was not only Jacob’s bunny that died, it was his bunny’s baby too.
As the days went by, more stories of dead bunnies and baby bunnies surfaced. The head of the community council heard about this and decided to hold an investigation. He found traces of snake skin on the grounds of one of the residents in the neighbourhood. He was convinced that a snake was the culprit.
About a month after, the complaints died down. There were no more cases of dead bunnies, because, well, all bunnies were indeed annihilated. It was particularly interesting when it came to the calculation of the total bunny death count.
The math :
First house has x number of bunnies. The snake can eat y amount of bunnies at a time.
= x-y
In the second house, the number of bunnies doubles and so does the snake’s capacity
=2x-2y-y
=2x-3y
In the third house, the number triples
=6x-9y-y
=6x-10y
In the fourth house, the number quadruples
=24x-40y-y
=24x-41y.
24x-41y=0
24x=41y
x=41, y=24
Using substitution,
(x-y)=41-24=17
34-24=10
30-24=6
24-24=0

The Curious Case of the Rat Population
Once upon a time in a land far off called Lembah Beringin, a sole entrepreneur decided to build a housing estate. He was to name the housing estate Taman Seri Desa. He then built the first four houses which were to make up the estate.
Upon completion of these first three housing he encountered a problem. His problem was a very big one as would be for any housing estate developer: rats! Unfortunately for him this was not a fairytale written for children to enjoy so the rats did not sing and help him. In fact, they cost him more money. They bit all the wires, pipes etc. that he used in construction. They were everywhere and he did not have a clue how to get rid of them.
Then one day as he was relaxing under a tree, having his lunch, he saw a cat eat a kitten nearby. He immediately had the idea of taking the cat back to his estate development to have the cat eat the rats.
His effort was fruitful as the cat ate rats too! Although the cat only at a fixed number of rats each day. When the cat was first introduced, there were x number of rats in house one. The cat then ate y number of rats. The remaining rats went to house two and the number of rats there doubled. When the cat then moved on to house two it ate another y number of rats. The uneaten cats moved to house three and the number of rats here tripled. The next day the cat ate y number of rats from house three. The rats which survived then migrated to house four and the numbers of rats here quadrupled. However, on the fourth day, when the cat ate the rats in house four, the rat population was totally wiped out!
So let’s figure out what happened to the population of rats which seemed to be increasing but eventually got totally wiped out.
Proving the Curious Case of the rats
House 1:
x-y = x-y
House 2:
2(x-y) – y = 2x-3y
House 3:
3(2x-3y)-y= 6x-10y
House 4:
4(6x-10y) – y = 24x – 41y
= 0
Therefore 24x = 41y
x:y = 41:24
Hence x = 41
y = 24
House 1:
41-24 = 17
House 2:
2(17) -24 = 10
House 3:
3(10) – 24 = 6
House 4:
4(6) -24 = 0
Who Owns The Fish?
Zoey is a 5-year old girl who LOVES mathematics, or perhaps anything related with numbers. An alien from planet MathNoobs detected Zoey’s outstanding math ability and so decided to make her one of their candidates for the annual intergalactic math championship to help gain a reputation for their planet.
While Zoey was playing hopscotch in the backyard of her house, a bright light flashed in front of her eyes. And the next thing she saw was a huge calculator covering almost half of the backyard. She was so excited that she ran and hopped the ‘ON’ button to see what happens. A hologram of a Dairy Milk Chocolate bar appeared from the screen and just when Zoey naïvely tried to reach for it, it spoke!
“STOP! I am not for eating!”
Surprised, and even more excited, Zoey said to herself “Whoa, a talking chocolate bar! It’s a dream come true!”
The chocolate was silent for quite some time until Zoey tried to reach for it again.
“Dear residence of Earth, we come in peace. I reckon you should be smart enough to know that I am from a foreign planet due to my abnormal form. Anyway, enough chatter, I shall go straight to the aim of my travel here.” “You my dear are being watched by my fellow planet-mates as you obtain outstanding ability in dealing with numbers. As such, we will now make you the representative of planet MathNoobs to compete in the intergalactic math championship to help us gain respect.”
Zoey went “Cool! I’d love to go to planet MathNoobs and see more talking chocolates!”
“That was easy, I thought you’d be all ‘No! you can’t make me!’ so I prepared a math puzzle for you to solve, you know, like if you can solve it I’ll let you go but if you can’t I’ll take you with me. It took me a lot of time to prepare. So I’m just going to ask you okay”
“It goes like this :
There are five houses in a row and in five different colors. In each house lives a person from a different country. Each person drinks a certain drink, plays a certain sport, and keeps a certain pet. No two people drink the same drink, play the same sport, or keep the same pet. So who owns the fish?”

2) The Swede keeps dogs
3) The Dane drinks tea
4) The green house is on the left of the white house
5) The green house owner drinks coffee
6) The person who plays polo rears birds
7) The owner of the yellow house plays hockey
8) The man living in the house right in the centre drinks milk
