Funny Story About Shoes
There was a little pixie that had a love for shoes. She fancied the humans who get to wear pretty shoes everyday. She chose to sit at her favorite spot on a tree right above a shoemaker’s shop every morning to watch him make shoes and the people who come in to buy them. Leira the pixie always dreamt of wearing the shoes she saw at the display window. Black ones, white ones, colored and floral-printed ones too. However pixies has tiny feet and there were no shoemakers in her pixie community. The others preferred to be barefoot as it always has been that way. Leira vowed that one day she too will wear shoes. Shoes made especially for her.
The shoemaker had one daughter who loved dolls. Her dolls had no shoes. So one day he decided to make shoes for the dolls. That night he started making the shoes. After making a certain number of shoes, he stopped for it was time for bed. Leira the pixie saw the shoes. It was just her size! Thinking the shoemaker had made the shoes for her, she carried a few of them back. However she could only carry a certain amount.
The next morning, the shoemaker saw a part of the shoe collection missing. Confused, he continued to make the shoes. He made two times the number of shoes left that night. As soon as he went to sleep, the pixie came back to get more shoes. She took the same amount of shoes as the previous night. The shoemaker woke up the next morning to find the same amount of shoes this time. Feeling very puzzled, he continued to make the shoes. This time, he made three times the amount of shoes left.
The pixie did the same thing that night. Carrying away the same number of shoes as the two previous nights. The next morning the shoemaker made 4 times the amount of shoes left, hoping that it would be enough for his daughter’s dolls. That night, the pixie returned, she did the same thing. She took the same number of shoes. The funny thing is, there were none left!
Pixie magic? Not really.
The math:
First night: x shoes made. y shoes taken.
x-y
Second night: 2(x-y) shoes made. y shoes taken
2x-2y-y= 2x-3y
Third night: 3(2x-3y) shoes made. y shoes taken.
6x-9y-y=6x-10y
Fourth night: 4(6x-10y) shoes made. y shoes taken.
24x-40y-y=24x-41y
41/24=x/y
Therefore, x=41 y=24
Substitute!
x-y = 41-24 = 17
2x-3y = 82-72 = 10
6x-10y = 246-240 = 6
24x-41y = 984-984 = 0
Mystery solved =)
